July has been our busiest month of term and started off with an exciting trip to Victoria Falls Primary School where we were generously hosted. Our soccer, hockey, netball and rugby teams travelled on this trip and returned with positive and pleasing results, winning the majority of their matches in a festival that included Maun School from Botswana.
Our 1st Rugby and Colts A also took part in the Hellenic Sevens in Harare and finished 4th and 7th respectively. 2nd Team rugby travelled to Gweru for MCS 10s Festival where they finished in 7th position.
The Netball Teams continued with their stellar season beating both Centenary and St Thomas Aquinas before putting up a great performance to finish in 2nd place at the Masiyephambili Netball Festival.
The Hockey Inter Provincials were held at Khumalo Stadium on 21st and 22nd July 2017. Matabeleland Girls finished in 5th place while the boys finished in 3rd place. Petra had 10 representatives in this tournament.
We hosted our Inaugural Grade 3 six-a-side soccer tournament on Friday 28th July 2017 and had an enjoyable time watching the little ones showing their skills. Petra’s team “Rock 6 FC” and “Petra Barca” played each other in the semi finals which saw “Rock 6 FC” through to the final only to lose 1 – 0 against “Centenary United”.
The Matland Duikers were the Champions of the 2017 Owen Davies Rugby Tournament which was hosted by Hillcrest School in Mutare. The last time the Duikers won this trophy was 19 years ago! Well done to the boys, coaches, manager and all concerned.
As we come to the end of the term, we would like to thank all the coaches and pupils, who have worked so very hard to produce the good results that continue to uplift our school and make us a force to be reckoned with in Zimbabwe. Special thanks go to Mrs Burgess, Mr. Phiri and Mr. Conolly, our external coaches for the sterling work they put in.
Petra Marimba Band by Mr V Ndebele
The Petra Primary Senior Marimba Band took part in the Rainbow Blaze Marimba Competition on Friday 28 July. 10 primary schools and 11 high schools took to the stage one band at a time. Each school was required to play 2 pieces; one piece of their choice and the set piece (Happy Hour by Rainbow Blaze Marimba Band). Our own choice was a medley of “We are walking in the light of God” and “God’s Love is Like a Circle”. The Petra band executed the music flawlessly to rapturous applause. After some deliberation by the judges, Petra Primary scored 88.5%, putting us in 2nd place and even scoring higher than several high schools. A great first appearance! Well done Senior Marimba Band. You have made us proud.
